The Lemonade Crypto Climate Coalition

The Lemonade Crypto Climate Coalition is a blockchain-based parametric crop protection program for subsistence farmers in Kenya. Led by the Lemonade Foundation and with additional founding partners including Avalanche, Chainlink, DAOstack, Etherisc, Hannover Re and Pula – the program was designed to protect farmers‘ livelihoods impacted by weather events during the recent growing season.

Protection for Kenyan Farmers

Nearly 7,000 smallholder farmers signed up to protect their crops during the most recent short rains season from October 2022 to January 2023 – with green grams and sorghum being two of the main staple foods grown throughout the region. At the end of the season cash transfers were automatically triggered based on area yield data and sent directly to farmers’ wallets via smart blockchain contracts. This enabled fast payouts without having to file claims or wait for human adjusters – lowering costs and avoiding a lengthy timeline associated with traditional claim processes.

Real Impact of Decentralized Technologies

Shai Wininger from The Lemonade Foundation commented on how encouraging it was to see “the very real impact decentralized technologies can have on smallholder farmers in Kenya”. He also mentioned that highly accurate data models trigger autonomous smart contracts resulting in cost savings as well as providing customers a better experience overall.

Scaling Up & Expanding Access

The Lemonade Crypto Climate Coalition is looking forward to expanding beyond this initial stage so they can continue scaling up their operations – giving more farmers access to critical financial protection when they need it most.

In conclusion we can say that through leveraging blockchain technology and partnering up with various organizations such as Avalanche, Chainlink etc., The Lemonade Crypto Climate Coalition has been able to make a positive difference in Kenyan farming communities by providing them access financial protection during times of climate disasters via fast cash transfers via smart blockchain contracts – something which would not have been possible before due its lengthier process involved in traditional claim processes
